Adil Kassim is a rising third year at the University of Chicago from Cambridge, MA. Adil is studying Data Science with a minor in Critical Race and Ethnic Studies and is working on the DSEER-NRT project this summer. Outside of classes, Adil is a member of the African and Caribbean Students Association and the Organization of Black Students. During his free time, Adil enjoys playing soccer, reading, and watching TV.

Kevin Uriostegui is a rising second year at the University of Chicago. He is from Peoria, Illinois and is majoring in Mathematics with an Education and Society minor. Kevin is working on updating previous resources on the DSEER website for newer instructors to use. In his free time, he is a part of UChicago's Esports Club and has been enjoying playing video games with fellow students.

Lavinia Cavalet is a rising second year at the University of Chicago. She is from Italy and is majoring in Public Policy and Environmental and Urban Studies. Lavinia is working on building the page, "resources for instructors", for the DSEER website with the objective of collecting suggestions on how to get started developing bootcamps on data science for research. In her free time (and when the weather is good), she loves to be outside, go for long walks and hikes and is also very passionate about dancing. This year she is joining a salsa club and is having lots of fun! :)

Katerina is a rising third-year at the University of Chicago. She is currently getting her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and is going to be working with the DSEER program this summer. She is originally from New York and is spending time developing her business this year as well. She loves traveling and has a love for music and animals.

Hunter is a rising second-year majoring in Biological Sciences and Environmental and Urban Studies. He has broad interests in conservation and environmental policy, and he hopes to pursue a related career. Originally from Clear Lake, IA, Hunter enjoys spending his free time reading, watching movies with friends, and spending time outdoors. He is currently working as an Environmental Data Science Program Assistant.

Jess is a rising second-year Environmental Science major. She is working with the DSEER program this summer. Outside of classes, she is a member of Phoenix Sustainability Initiative and the Campus Composting project group. She also plays violin with the University Symphony Orchestra and is a teacher with the South Side Free Music Program. She is originally from the western suburbs of Chicago, specifically Oak Park and Forest Park, and is passionate about sustainability.

Hannah is a rising second year at The University of Chicago. She is from West Hartford, CT. Hannah is extremely interested in law and is planning on majoring in Public Policy with a minor in Spanish. Currently, she is an administrative assistant who updates and maintains the RDCEP website, creates template files and analyzes data for annual reports, and helps compile and compose information for annual reports. Aside from classes, Hannah is involved in Model United Nations, plays the alto saxophone in Jazz X-Tet, and gives back to the community with her co-ed community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Hannah also enjoys reading and running in her free time.

Robert is a sixth year PhD student in environmental history at the University of Chicago. His research explores historical energy use in the United States, especially its effects on industrialization, labor, and society. He received his BA in History and Music from Amherst College in 2012

Anant Matai is a fourth-year studying Mathematics and Computer Science, with pretty broad interests that currently include urban sociology, renewable energy, and computer science. At RDCEP, Anant is developing a front-end application to download, convert, and label observational data on clouds to build a dataset of cloud images with cloud types. An avid scuba diver, Anant is interested in combining his skills in technology and scuba diving to conduct environmental research related to the ocean, eventually with a focus on policy. In his free time, he works as a barista at Ex Libris Cafe.

Samir is a rising second year studying molecular engineering. He is currently working on the accumulation of data science and programming resources for graduate students in the energy and environmental field who either don't have the experience or wish to hone their skills. He is also compiling these resources and organizing them into the DSEER website through the creation of a resources page so that students can have access to the resources from their computers or other mobile devices. He is interested in studying biology, especially genetics, and is also interested in paleontology. He is originally from San German, Puerto Rico. In his free time, Samir likes to photograph birds and other animals.

Jerin is a rising second year at the University of Chicago who plans to study Chemistry or Psychology and to go on to medical school after graduating. This summer she is working on collecting coding resources for the DSEER program as well as building a website to organize and display these resources. In her free time, Jerin likes to draw digitally. She is originally from New York City.

Eva is a rising fourth-year at the University of Chicago who hails from Hoboken, NJ. She’s double-majoring in physics and music with a minor in Spanish. She has worked on the RDCEP website and is currently working on a literature review for a research project on crop modeling and climate change. Eva has also worked at UChicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program for the last three years. She is also co-president of UChicago’s Society of Women Engineers and is passionate about supporting other women in STEM, both on campus and in the greater Hyde Park community. During her free time, she enjoys playing saxophone in Jazz X-Tet and watching TV.

Michelle is a rising second-year planning to study economics with a specialization in data science at the University of Chicago. She worked on gathering and organizing open source data science resources for UChicago’s DSEER program. This summer she is interning with a Cleveland-based venture capital firm to help revitalize midwestern entrepreneurship. On campus, she enjoys working as a barista at Ex Libris Cafe. Michelle is originally from Cleveland, Ohio.

James is a rising third-year environmental-science major at UChicago who hails from London, England, and Sichuan, China. For the past year, he’s been working on a RDCEP data-visualization project on recent Chinese energy history, and he’s currently a Summer Institute of Social Research Methods fellow, where he is applying GIS and spatial analysis to a project on coal miners’ health during the British industrial revolution. James is interested in applying his background in the physical and social sciences to environmental and quantitative historical research. In his spare time, he likes to hike, jog, and read magazines.

Chase is a rising fourth-year Environmental and Urban Studies major and Statistics minor. Always passionate about food security and agriculture, he’s currently working with Professor Elisabeth Moyer to evaluate climate models and better understand how climate change will impact agricultural yields. His past work includes developing crop planning infrastructure and conducting sales analysis for a local food hub in his hometown of Cincinnati, OH. On campus, Chase serves as University section editor for The Gate, UChicago’s undergraduate political review, and runs for the school’s varsity cross country and track teams. You can also find him wandering the aisles at the Sem Co-op (or, for now, dreaming about when its doors will reopen).

Alex is a rising junior at Haverford College, where he studies Computer Science and Philosophy. He is working on re-implementing storm identification and tracking algorithms developed by researchers at UChicago and the Argonne National Laboratory, to be released as a public Python package. His primary research interests are in algorithm development with an eye towards ethically and environmentally responsible computing, and various subfields of philosophy. Outside of academic work, Alex enjoys track and field, electronic music, and meditation.
Research Focus: Air pollution and climate variability
Bio: I came from Qinhuangdao, China, which is a seaside city quite near to Beijing. I got my bachelors' degree in Atmospheric Science at Peking University. I was admitted as PhD student at University of Chicago in 2018.
